Mozilla Firefox's add-ons

Now that I am between jobs, and have some time on hand I thought, let’s maybe contribute or share or just throw something out there.
Let’s start off with some sites worth going to, some applications worth loading up to juice up the Internet experience.
Before all that, it’s worth mentioning that if you don't have Mozilla, it would be worth your while to install that first. It kind of makes you feel you are incharge, you know. I don't know how anyone could ever use IE. I have installed all these add-ons that it becomes hard for me to use the Internet any place else than my good ol' lappy. Add-ons worth installing, that save you time and make the interface nice and fancy are:

  • Clipmarks
  • Cooliris Previews
  • Internote
  • Mouse Gestures
  • Permatabs
  • Research Word
  • Speed Dial
  • Tab Effect

All these make Internet a better experience.
All these any hundreds more can be found here.
More as and when I find and install more. Let me know if you know of more interesting ones. If not, try one of those and you will thank me.

Subhamangala Saavdhaan...

A lot's happened in the last year. I met Madhura, proposed to her. She accepted and we tied the knot on the 2nd of April 2007.
Meeting her was an adventure on its own. Getting her to come out for a cup of coffee took 5 full months! All I thought to myself was, "Give me one chance, one chance is all I need". Well that day was the 30th of September 2006! I was out helping Ashish-Meghana move when Timcy tells me that Madhura has emailed me asking me to meet her at Caribou coffee at 6:00pm. GAWD!!! For one, its 4:00pm and I am an hour's drive away. And I DO NOT like the coffee. Even pouring 12 sachets of sugar and loads of creamer doesn't make it mild enough for me. (Lest did I know then that Madhura LOVES coffee!) Well...there's a point of dispute right there!
So I unload all of Ajo's stuff at his new place and drive like a maniac, just in time for a quick shower, throw on a set of pressed clothes, pour on that fuckin exorbitant perfume on myself (the one that was shelved for 'special' occasions, you know) and rush to Caribou. I was late by 10 minutes (after getting a half hour extension already). She looked lovely! I could barely control the drool. I wonder if she noticed my googled eyes. Well,
she didn't notice that I had sliced myself while shaving. We struck off pretty good. Numbers were exchanged (that's a positive sign!). I mentioned to her that I was off for Dandiya that evening in Dearborn. She had another party to go to.
That was one date I am not going to forget in a hurry!
And one year later, we still make it a point to celebrate every month-end with an elaborate date. Go out for a nice dinner to the different restaurants around town.
She did turn up at the Dandiya place. And Deval told me there, "Mein bhi PT hun." Thats one joke that is going to be repeated over and over and over again.
One thing led to another. Love was in the air, then a breakup (that didn't last too long), a proposal with all the will-you-marry-me bells and whistles (yes! I went down on my knees, at Caribou coffee (AAWWW!!), on Valentine's Day, with a diamond ring). I am not going to do this ever again, so I thought, might as well make it memorable.
So well...the parents me
et up back home, all's okay. Madhura leaves a week before I do and the wedding bells ring in Pune on April 2nd. It was a nice wedding. Everyone made it and most importantly, everyone enjoyed.

The honeymoon was
in Switzerland! Don't even ask what I had to go through to get all those arrangements finalized. Well, everything's well that ends well. Switzerland was like living a dream. We were like two love-birds. Perfect weather, perfect location, perfect girl with me...what else can a man ask for?
We'd been to Zurich,
Interlaken, Lucerne, Jungfrau.

Now this is supposed to be the highest place in Europe. A man is entitled to view everything that is 'viewable'. Guess that all changes after you tie the 'noose'.

I hated it when I got back and had to go to work. We set up base at Beacon Hill Apartments. This was a place I fell in love with the first time I saw it when I was looking for apartments in Michigan. We have this nice cozy place. Set off on a shopping spree and got about setting up this place. I like it so far. So far this is how it all looks like...

Ooppssiiee...wrong one!

Yeah...those look like the right ones.
We've traveled quite a bit since and have plans for more.
More on the travels part later...
Bless us all who read this.

Do you take your job personally?

Shawna and Tracy call me over for an update of what's goin on at the lines. Why are we meeting rate? So I update them. Everyone claims the clip machine's fucking up and we ain't meeting rate. Thats ridiculous! The guys in the second make rate consistently. The bitch in the first gabbers away to glory and doesn't want to make rate. Why? "Why should we? We dont get any incentive...no overtime....no appreciation". True..very true! Is that a management problem? Maybe, maybe not.
But well...anyways...
Shawna tells me..."You know what yours and Jeremy's problem is? You guys are too nice with our suppliers and they are taking advantage of you!" Hmmm...point noted your honor. But hasn't our work been done without any sparks flying around? Never mind...I ain't going to correct her. I dont want to.
So they call up Jim. Ask me to be in the room and just listen and tell them if what he says is true or not. Now if at all I am anyone's fan...that Jim. I don't like this scenario. But nevertheless I want to see how these two femmes tackle Jim...or rather the other way round. :)
That's one phone conversation I dont want to forget in a hurry. Two ruthless customer femmes...trying to ream Jim's ass. Naahhh! He wouldn't give way. That was one smooth way to tackle.
After the phone call...I ask Tracy..."Did you get whatever you wanted off that phone call? Were you satisfied with what Jim had to say?" And all she says,,,"Well...kinda"
And then I talk to Jim later..."How did the conversation go?". He replies back...."GREAT! They hammered me...I hammered back! All in good spirits. This is business. You dont take anything personally."
Nice! I guess thats a good point there. You take things people say too personally and your emotions come into play and ego gets involved. You DONT want that. That was a lesson learnt.
I gave that a lot of thought over the past couple of days. Is that right? "Dont take your job personally" Can that be right? I think yes! This does not mean that you gotta be one shameless SOB. But you dont take it upon you that all that happens is your fault.
Another session of 'random ramblings' :)

How does leadership work?!

Alright....so here I am sitting on my bed. On a friday evening...8pm...what the fuck am I doing on my bed? Looks like the last couple of meals were pretty spicy...so I ain't really feeling like straying too far away from the 'blissful' toilet seat.
By the by...for whatever reason...the most peaceful time of my day is while I am on the 'throne', if I may call it that. Right? There's not a thing to be stressed out about. You read, you just think of nothing...no one cares! And no one disturbs you then. THAT I call B-L-I-S-S!
Not to wander away from the topic...(that reminds me...I gotta think about the 'throne' and scribble something in some day)...
So here I was on the toilet seat and reading this book..."Molloy's Live for Success". Tells you plain blank and straight...how successful people behave. No bullcrap about how to get successful, the 'attitude'...nothing! Just how they behave and carry themselves. Good read...yeah...
And then that gets me thinking...successful! And then I relate this attitude with people in my circle I consider 'successful'. One point to note amongst successful people is the way they carry themselves and how they handle power. I compare what I read with the people I know. Man! There sure is a correlation! You demand power! Yes sir!
Medusa (thats Shawna, the VP of sales and engineering at my company) calls us in today...department meeting. Now this femme has lately developed a reputation for really being a 'medusa'. I'd nicknamed her out of my love for her...lest did I know she would turn out to be one. She liked the name. I was in love. The normal atmosphere in the company is pretty cozy. Lately thats not true. So, Medusa calls us in and all of us are like...now what? She's like, "Let me keep this short and sweet." And Brian, in his usual hear-all-whisper goes, "Are we all fired?". Somehow Shawna didnt think that was funny. Anyways, so, she's like..."I hear all these clicks to minimize internet explorer window. No more useless surfing other than work related stuff." Gosh! Simply put...somehow what she said in those 5 mins...right from Michael, the intern to Bob, the 60 something balding designer shake their heads as if they were being reprimanded. Like a 13-year-old caught shizzling the nizzle! Now THATS power. Dunno if all this makes sense at all. But I sure saw the 'behaviour' I am talking about.

Reservations?

Frankly speaking, I hardly read forwards that I do not care about. But this one caught my attention and for once I read it over. And again and again...(if you guys havent....and care to read further...quickly glance through the previous mails)
With all due respect to all his educational qualifications, I would care less for Mr.Ravishankar's views. (Yeah yeah! who cares what I care... )
But one thing's for sure...good 'education', I thought, brings about a sense of maturity and understanding. Going through Ravishankar's views about why reservation is justified, I feel nauseated. All that education at IIT and CMU down the drain?! Tsk tsk tsk!
Who in hell wants all castes to be 'represented' percentage wise? You score...you are in. You dont...you are out! No problem. Thats not the end of the world. There are plenty of career paths to choose from. How much simpler can it all get? Where do percentages come into the picture. Do I blame my forefathers for not procreating enough to justify a higher percentile representation?
"Reverse discrimination". hehehehehehe! Does someone sit there and come up with such terms? Or is it an officially recognized technical term? Give that a thought...'reverse discrimination'. Gosh! I cannot help smiling.
Missed your opportunity to get to the stage where you can appear for the entrance exams?..Yes! THAT I understand. Not everyone has the sources to send their kids for a decent high school education. (Ravishankar kind of ducks this bouncer, doesnt he?) This is where our (pathetic) government should step in. Get the parents to send the kids to school. How? I dont know! Thats not my job. You guys figure it out. Is it really that difficult? Thoda dimaag daudao..it ain't that difficult.
I know not how the government is elected. I hear about all those booze parties before and after the elections, especially in the economically deprived areas (where most of India's population is) and that having a bearing on the results. So has the government being elected consciously weighing the pros and cons of how and what it is going to do for the economically and 'caste'-backward communities? Or on the percentage of alcohol? ChandraBabu Naidu was doing pretty good, wasnt he? And the dimwits voted him out! Gosh! How pathetic can that get?!
This friend of mine...all he did the whole of high school was dick around. Gives his entrance exam, screws it up...we get together for a round of drinks and this fuckface says, "koi nahi...form bhar dunga...koi sc/st ka form hai...mil jayega seat". So, if this pinhead would have scored good enough, he wouldnt have filled up the form? So he eats up from the 'FC quota'. Right? Yeh kahan ki insaafi hai Ravishankar saheb?!
Why even have entrance exams when you know that though the exams are a good judge, the results are already skewed!
And then, to add to the BS...there comes this 'scheme'...wherein all requisite text books are paid for! I know so many pals who get the Rs.100 from their parents who are pretty well-to-do back home, AND Rs.100 from the government for the same text book. These 'mathematics' somehow does not add up. Does it? And where does the money for those text books come from? Taxes. Who pays the most taxes? hehehehehe!!!!! kuch chamka? btw...our man never bought the book at all! He borrowed it a couple of days before the second attempt! "rroobbeerrttt...yeh hai ssmmaarrtt booyy"
Who knows, in due course of time...the "FCs" will themselves have to be allocated a 'FC quota', after being 'deprived of opportunities'.
I dont know who all will even care to read the replies on this subject. (But if you are reading this, GOSH! I caught your attention!)
And I am NOT sorry if I sounded rude or out-of-context. I do NOT want to start a discussion or a mud-slinging fest around here. But for Almighty's sakes, have some respect for those guys back home who CARE and doing their part in rallying and having their bones smashed.
I might have a biased and one-sided opinion. Of course! I have every right to! I saw my seat taken away. And I did not score less than the what-did-he-say....haan! "reserved-category cut-off marks"(I had to copy-paste that term). Did not want to go to some God-forsaken place for my degree. btw...does "reserved-category cut-off marks" qualify as an oxymoron? Give it a thought.
Maybe my answer to the question "How much social cost are we willing to bear to make the market truly open so that ALL talent will flourish?" would be "Zilch".
Try as much as I want to, I really aint able to understand the connection of 'matimonial columns in popular newspapers' to 'reservation rocks!'
Wow! Dekhte dekhte...looks like this is a pretty long email. Better stop ...

And this is as a reply to what Ravishankar had to say...
A little bit of background about Ravishankar - he is a 1997 BTech from IITM. He finished a Ph.D in CMU, worked at Motorola for a few years, went back and was a professor in IITM. He then decided to work full time for AID (Association of India's development) and is one of AID Jeevan Saathis (AID Fellows).
Mathematics of Reservations- Ravishankar Arunachalam
Imagine that the government came up with a proposal to build a new world-class technology institution to provide quality education to all students. Imagine, too, that a debate rages on the viability ofbuilding such an institution - in terms of the costs involved, student quality, desired outcomes etc. Now, imagine that such a debate takesplace with little reference to IITs or the role they have played in technical education. Outrageous, you would think ? Yet, something similar is happening in the reservation debate, both within and outside AID. he record of states which have implemented OBC reservations already is seldom brought up.
The case of TamilnaduStates like Tamilndu, Kerala, Karnataka and AndhraPradesh have already implemented reservation for OBCsin educational institutions. I will restrict myreferences to Tamilnadu alone, since I do not knowabout the situation in other states. In Tamilnadu, the total reservation is 69%, the split up for which is given below (refwww.tn.gov.in/policynotes/bc_mbc_welfare.htm)for convenience
Category Population (lakhs) % of Total %Resered
Backward Classes 287 46.2% 30%
Most Backward Classes 129 20.7% 20%
Scheduled Classes 118 19% 18%
Scheduled Tribes 7 1.1% 1%
Others 80 13%
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total 621 100% 69%
BCs and MBCs of Tamilnadu are together equivalent tothe "OtherBackward Castes", as they are referred to inthe rest of the country. The most obvious observationfrom the table above is that the percentage of reservations is only equal to or lower thanthepercentage of the group in the overall population. So the reservation system is only trying to bring aboutproportional representation in educationalinstitutions. It does not result in a reverse-discrimination (which would mean BCs get morethan their proportional share in order to righthistorical wrongs), as many peopleclaim. FCs, who formthe "others", still get the bulk of the 31% open-quota seats even though their population percentage is only13%.
Overall, the experience with reservation has been verypositive, and that is why there is wide-spread supportfor it in the state. The government health-care system in Tamilnadu is better than most other states, and onereason has been the quality doctors that thesystem produces, a factor attributed to reservations. Many of them also opt toserve in rural areas. Notsurprisingly, the TN chapter of the Indian Medical Association supports quotas for the OBCs.
Now it is not difficult to see why theanti-reservation polemic does not refer to states likeTamilnadu with an OBC reservation record. It is becausethere are no instances of bridges cracking due to faulty design and patients dying due to incompetentdoctors. These are often cited as the potential dangersdue to reservations, either directly ormore subtly as"quality will deteriorate". I am not saying that thereare no problems with govt doctors or hospitals inTN, but these problems are present in other states too,and the overall quality is still better in Tamilnadu.Who gets in and who does'nt ?
Of course, forward castes aren't happy with the situation, in spite of having a larger representationthan their proportion in the population. The problem isthat the total number of seats available is so low thatmost people are left out. But this is true of every single category, and not just FCs. Many of us,belonging to the forward castes, have a lot of friendswho are "left out", and feel outraged that its due toreservations ( though many FC candidates score lowerthan even the reserved-category cut-off marks, and still blamereservations!). But the question to askis: What about the lakhs of people from the MBCs andBCs who get left out ? There are thousands of farmers' daughters and weavers' sons who either are unable toget to high school, or even if they do, do not getadequate support from homeand are unable to affordcoaching classes. We seldom know them and donotencounter them in our day-to-day lives. Yet they are real students, who are not only unable to get intothese seats, but do not even getthe opportunity tocompete on an even footing. Are we pre-supposingthatthese students are all devoid of merit? According tothe math above, for every FC friend of ours, there areatleast 5 BC/MBC students who were denied theopportunity to get a seat. Who speaks for them ?
Economic criterion
Such examples immediately bring up the point that reservations have'nt resulted in what they intended todo. Again, experience in Tamilnadu points otherwise. There are any number of good students frombackwardcastes who get into Anna university every year due toreservations, and excel in their careers. In addition, there is already a provision forexcluding the creamy layer of each caste fromreservation (the list of conditions thatexclude aperson from enjoying OBC reservation benefits, is at http://ncbc.nic.in/html/creamylayer.html)so that onlythe needy get the benefits.
What about purely economic criteria, leaving out caste? While that might work in an ideal caste-less society,we have to acknowledge that caste is still a hugefactor governing societal relationships today.Thosewho think that "caste is not a factor in urban India anymore",need only look at the matrimonial columns ofany popular newspaper.
The supreme court has also ruled that reservationsbased on purely economic conditions isunconstitutional. Besides, economic conditions can easily change over time, whereas caste does not offerany mobility. That is why, inspite of reservations, ittakes a lot of time for real empowerment of the lowercastes. And just because a caste is"considered" low, it wont become an OBC. It has to satisfyseveral conditions to be included associo-economically" backward , for example that theproportion of graduates is 20% lower than the state orlocalaverage (complete list of guidelines at http://ncbcnic.in/html/guideline.html).The outrageousfact is that there still are clearly identifiablecastes and sub-castes which fall in such categories, exposing the deep-rootednature of our caste system.
Conclusion:As AIDers, we have a conscious responsibility to notonly appreciate the problems of those from our castesand backgrounds, but also the millons of Indians who are generally unable to take part at all levels in thegovernment education/adiminstration system. Let usgo beyond our individual class/caste biases and take aposition on theissue

Setting up your fish tank

Finally did get myself the long-awaited aquarium. A 20 gallon starter kit that is available in any Petsmart or Petco store supplies most of the necessary initial goods. Though the itch to put in all those fishes is strong, my research tells me that patience, especially for maintaining a healthy and beautiful aquarium, is a virtue. Here's what I have found that needs to be done after you decide to maintain an aquarium:The list of things that need to be acquired:
The tank, of course! (duh). Personally I wanted to get a real huge tank. That is actually a good idea. It is a better idea to get more than you may want. Fishes need their space in the tank and you dont want them to fight for food and space in a crowded tank (reminds me of Bombay?!). And as you start loving and adding more and more fishes in your tank, you realize that there is not enough room for all of them. So...the bigger the better. A hood to keep the fish from jumping out, prying hands, outside dirt and house the lighting system. A water filter. Excellent water quality is prime to keep the fish healthy and active. Filters help do this by pulling in the water and filtering it off the goo and chemicals.Internal filters sit inside the tank and a pump circulates the water through the filtering media. Power filters hang outside the tank and basically do the same thing. The underwater filter sits beneath the gravel and pulls in the water from under the gravel. This is good for a saltwater large tank with bigger fishes. Mine's a power filter that was a simple assembly. Priming the pump was necessary to get the water running nice and smooth. An air pump. Keeps the water full of nice and rich oxygen. Different capacities of pumps are available depending on how small or large your tank is. Choose one that suits your tank and wallet.A wide variety of air-stones, air-wands or an air-powered ornament like the alligator whose mouth opens to let out the bubbles makes the air bubbles look gorgeous. The bubble noise is a soothing experience to you too. I am not sure how the fish like it though. Guess, they do get used to it in due course of time. Afterall I did get used to staying so close to the airport. An air-pump is not required if you were to use a wet/dry filter which has its own air-water squisher. Gravel and plants. Not only do these give your acquarium the lively look, they are an essential part of your tank's ecological system. Gravel house those bacteria that help maintain the essential nitrogen cycle. The plants help keep the oxygen going nice and strong and keep the carbon-dioxide under control. The rule of the thumb for adequate amount of stones/gravel is: Weight of stones/gravel(in lbs.) = 1.5 x Capacity of tank (in gallons)Have a good mixture of gravel and stone and ornaments in the tank for the fish to amuse themselves. They probably will have their own hang-out and party places in the different nooks and corners. Keep in mind that some fishes need an enveloped space to rest. Have atleast one ornament that gives the fish its nice little place. A heater. Freshwater fishes need a particular set temperature to survive. The overlapping of all the ranges of temperatures for different fishes has led me to set the temperature of my tank to 68 to 72 deg f. A cute little heater and a stick-on thermometer does the trick. Make sure that the heater and the thermometer are at the opposite ends of the tank just so that the thermometer displays the right overall tank temperature.Other accessories include airline pipes, a stick-on wallpaper, water testing strips, pH and water treatment chemicals. These make the tank look good and the water too!Having assembled all these components, rest your tank on a strong and sturdy base. Fill her up with cold tap water. And get all your pumps running. Wait! The fishes don't go in right away. Not for a while atleast. Let the pumps and gravel and chemicals do their work. For ATLEAST 3-4 days. Let the water settle down and get rid of its harsh chemicals and kick off the nitrogen cycle. Visually there will not be any changes. Take a sample of the water to a nearby Petco or Petsmart or any Aquaworld store and they will test your pH, Nitrate, Ammonia and Chlorine levels and let you know if your tank is hale and hearty for your fish. A couple of 'starter' fishes and/or chemicals will help speed up this process.
